About Ribble Film Club

Ribble Film Club

The Film Club was formed in 2000 by a band of dedicated film lovers hoping to preserve the tradition of film and cinema in Clitheroe. We strive to bring a rich mix of art-house, foreign, classic and new films to film fans in Clitheroe and surrounding areas in Lancashire.

Cinema in Clitheroe at the Grand Cinema

35mm films were screened from January 2001 at The Grand Cinema in Clitheroe on a weekly basis through to April 2003, save Summer recesses.

The Film Club was originally formed in conjunction with Trinity Community Partnership and achieved record breaking attendance for a single screening with 'Rabbit Proof Fence' at the Ribble Film Club Australian Film Festival.

The Grand Cinema was then closed for refurbishment and Ribble Film Club had to find alternatives. It decided to seperate from Trinity to allow it to apply for Lottery Funding.

£5,000 was received from "Awards for All" early in 2004 to enable the purchase of everything to show films digitally. In May 2004 monthly screenings commenced at the Ribble Borough Council Chamber thanks to the assistance of the Leader of the Council - Councillor John Hill (an avid film buff). With the closure of The Grand Cinema late in 2004 it was relocated to St. Mary's Centre, Church St, Clitheroe, along with Stage & Screen @ St. Mary's.

Run by enthusiastic volunteers (Bruce 'the Chair' Dowles has even learned how to operate the projector), Ribble Film Club announces this new season of films and we hope to see you all soon.
